Nissan was founded in 1933, under the name of Datsun. Its company is located in Japan and it was a core member of The Nissan Group, but has since become more independent under restructuring. The company in its early days came to Detroit to learn about auto manufacturing and subsequently began to import machinery through Mitsubishi from the US. The company primarily started with military vehicles and went on to build basic cars and trucks primarily for the Japanese market. It wasn’t until the 1950′s, that Nissan decided to expand into foreign markets to continue their growth. Nissan formed a US subsidiary and began selling cars in America in 1959. The company gained initial success with the Datsun Fairlady roadsters and continued to build variants of it throughout the years including the famous Nissan S30, or otherwise known as the Datsun 240Z.
It wasn’t until the 1973 Oil Crisis that the company heavily expanded. This was due to the fact that American consumers needed more fuel efficient vehicles to deal with high gas prices. Nissan built many more factories throughout the world to meet demand. Nissan’s market share grew steadily the mid 1970′s, but eventually ran into financial difficulties in the late 1990′s. An alliance with the French automaker Renault help save the company and Renault appointed Carlos Ghosn as CEO. He has since restructured Nissan and brought the company back to profitability. This plan also included revamping Nissan’s luxury division of Infiniti.
Nissan currently has a wide range of cars, trucks, and SUVs catering to all sections of the market. Nissan’s lineup includes the Versa, Cube, Sentra, Maxima, Quest, Titan, Altima, Rogue, Murano, Xterra, Pathfinder, and Armada. Such notable and widely publicized vehicles include the Nissan 370Z, Nissan GTR, and Nissan Leaf.
