Land Rover is a British company that is part of the Jaguar Land Rover business owned by Tata Motors. The company is second to Jeep as to having the longest surviving 4×4 brands. The marquee has gone through a number of owners but originated in 1948 by the Rover Company. Jeep had inspired the original prototype and its components came from much of the surplus aluminum and parts available from World War II. Much of Land Rover’s early vehicles were built and performed like military vehicles. Even the choices of color ranged from a number of shades of green that was sourced from surplus aircraft cockpit paint. The Marque became known for its durability and longevity and it was often advertised that most of the vehicles Land Rover has built still exist as a testament to the manufacturing. The company’s vehicles have been militarized throughout the world, including Britain, and continue to serve in a number of environmental conditions. BMW briefly owned the company from 1994 – 2000 and sold it to Ford in the latter year. Ford then sold the company to Tata motors along with Jaguar as part of its restructuring plan.
The brand over the years has expanded its line to include milder SUVs intended to compete in the midsize luxury segment. The company, however, has experienced very low quality and reliability ratings for years despite its cult like club status. Tata motors has expressed its desire to improve the brand’s quality rankings and is bringing new vehicles to the market such as the 2011 Evoque. The marque’s current lineup includes the LR2, LR4, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport.
